Guest speakers included Assistant USTR Timothy Stratford, Deputy Assistant Secretary USDC Ira Kasoff, and AMCHAM Chairman John Watkins. Approximately 50 guests were in attendance for this closed door, off the record meeting to discuss forward looking commerce relations between the United States and China. Attendees included business leaders from various US companies operating in China, as well as guests from the US Embassy.

Mr. Stratford and Dr. Kasoff provided an update on plans for the 2010 JCCT (Joint Commission on Commerce and Trade) and a briefing on their meetings with Chinese official ministries. There were also discussions on the impact of recent political events that may strain US/China relations such as the Dalai Lama, Copenhagen, and Taiwan. Overall consensus is that US and China relations have never been so important to the stability of both sides. Recognizing this, it is to the advantage of both to workout amicable solutions to their political differences.

Tim Stratford is the Assistant US Trade Representative for China Affairs at the Office of the United States Trade Representative. He is responsible for developing and implementing US trade policy toward Mainland China, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Macao and Mongolia. Mr. Stratford has extensive experience in China and served as a former Chairman of AMCHAM.

Dr. Ira Kasoff is the Deputy Assistant Secretary for Asia and has had extensive experience in Asia. He has served six commercial service assignments in the region, in addition to his private-sector and academic experience.
